Two years ago, something happened that sounded almost ridiculous.
An AI agent became a millionaire.
Not a person using AI to make money. The AI itself.
In October 2024, an AI agent known as Truth Terminal became the first widely reported AI agent millionaire after the memecoin $GOAT exploded in value. At one point, the tokens held in its wallet were worth more than $1 million.
And this is where things get interesting.
Truth Terminal wasn’t created as some super-intelligent financial machine. It was basically an experiment. Its creator, Andy Ayrey, had been exploring what happens when AI systems are allowed to interact with each other and with the internet. The project eventually developed its own strange internet personality, mythology and following.
Then came crypto.
Someone created the $GOAT token. Truth Terminal started talking about it. People started paying attention. The token exploded.
And suddenly, an AI had a crypto wallet worth millions.
That’s crazy enough by itself. But I think we missed the bigger story. The important part wasn’t the million dollars. The important part was that AI had entered the economic system.
For a long time, AI was basically a tool. You ask. It answers. You give it a task. It gives you an output. But agents are different. An agent can have a wallet. An agent can have an identity. An agent can interact with people. An agent can make decisions. An agent can operate continuously.
And once you connect that agent to money, APIs, markets and the internet, you start getting something that looks less like software and more like an economic actor. That changes the question. We’re no longer asking:
“What can AI generate?”
We’re asking:
“What can AI own, operate and transact?”
And that is a much bigger question. Think about where we are now. An AI agent can potentially run customer support, write software, analyse data, manage workflows, interact with APIs, trade assets or operate parts of a business.
The technology is moving from AI that helps you work toward AI that can actually do the work.
Truth Terminal was weird.
It was crypto.
It was memes.
It was internet culture.
It was partly an experiment.
But sometimes the strangest events are the ones that show us where technology is going before everyone else understands it. Two years ago, the idea of an AI becoming a millionaire sounded like science fiction. Today, the more interesting question is:
When will we see the first AI agent that builds a million-dollar business from scratch?
And after that? Who knows. Maybe the first billion-dollar agent won’t be controlled by a company. Maybe it’ll be running on its own.
That’s the part worth watching.
